You got the wrong embryos

Published September 23, 2009

The reason I havent posted in so long is because I have not created new work. Ive been thinking a lot about what I want to do, but it is more like worrying. I have been under a constant cycle of self criticism, self acknowledgement, self self self….

Its difficult to try and think ahead when you barely have the present figured out. It is something we all have to do and avoiding it is just going to make the situation worse. I realize that I am about to pass through an important stage in my life and instead of jumping in, like you did from high school to college, you have to prepare for adulthood before it even happends, before you want it to happen. I am afraid of growing too slowly, I try to put things into perspective. Maybe I am not ready to grow, my path is somewhere else that will lead me to it, but being the best at what you do is where you put your self worth right? If you are not good at something what are you good for. Ive never felt this sense of urgency before and I dont fucking like it. Im being dramatic because isnt this how your inner monologue goes from time to time?

Your work to me is quiet and meaningful. The subjects are often hard to read and that keeps my attention. Their expressions seem genuine and unposed.
On the top image I love the fact that you do the opposite of what most do these days with portraits, which is use way too much contrast. The lack of a true black is nice. It reminds me of this stunning portrait i saw on the weblog the imagist.
The second image feels a bit cramped. I like the environment, and the subject is nice but i feel as though you could better portray him by taking a few steps back. The vertical nature of the framing leaves a whole lot of dead space up top and makes me feel like he’s getting swallowed up into the black. That could possibly be a good thing though. I like the upward viewing angle of the subject, its different.
The bottom image I’m on the edge about. It’s very far from a snapshot which is nice. It’s something I find difficult not to do when i photograph at such public places such as that. I love the seriousness of the girl on the right.

I hope I’m not being over critical. Your work is really improving and I look forward to seeing more of it.

I really like the first image. It doesn’t seem over thought out. Its simple and that makes it beautiful. I think the composition works for the bottom image, but I am not really a fan of the expression on the expression on the girl in yellow.
