Here's myself introducing…myself!

Hellooooo there Sunday and Wednesday! I’m back! This time I’m here to post regularly. Okay, so let me just talk a little about what I’ve been working on. I’ve already graduated and have been in Rochester all summer. It wasn’t going to be worth it if I wasn’t working or doing work (or at least photographing) all summer. I’ve managed to keep myself pretty busy, to say the least. Anyway, here I am at the end of the summer. This summer I shot about 20 fresh rolls of 120, 3 rolls of 35mm, hundreds of digital images, finished scanning the last 15 rolls of my images I created in London and only printed about ¼ of it (unfortunately). I’d say I’ve been relatively productive. I’ve definitely been motivated.

So the past two weeks have been crunch time for me. I have been trying to make myself a little bit more marketable as an assistant, as well as being focusing on looking for jobs of other sorts (such as production assistants and facility coordinators). Realizing that I may want to assist for a still life photographer, I don’t actually have any halfway decent still life images to show my competency. So I set to work for the past two weeks making a mini portfolio of still lives. I started off with some weirder images (random fruit on brightly colored backgrounds and gelled). I’m just playing.

Then I got a little bit serious.

When I photographed these items I wanted to present them in a clean, crisp and precise fashion. Normally for shots like these, the photographer would use brand spankin new items so the images are pristine. I instead wanted to use what I had on hand. They also act as an exercise for myself that I can still light in the studio pretty well. What they also became for my are almost high end found still lives.

Either way, all it comes down to is me having access to $50,000 worth of photography gear and just playing with it, trying to create something beautiful. Not enough students do that. Just play.

Oh and here’s a recent self portrait of myself inspired by Nadav Kander’s portrait of David Lynch.

Goodbye until Sunday!

I am in love with the color and the texture of the broccoli in the first image, but not too crazy about the background. I’d almost like to see it with a black background like your last three images. anyway, i’m really digging your still lives.
